Western Union to - STOP - telegrams


With little fanfare (just the message below posted on their website) the folks at Western Union have ended 155 years of providing the service that their name had become synonymous with...
Effective January 27, 2006, Western Union will discontinue all Telegram and Commercial Messaging services. We regret any inconvenience this may cause you, and we thank you for your loyal patronage.
According to this Reuters report, this does not signal the death of Western Union, but rather a new chapter for them. Nearly all of their business comes from transferring money around the world -

At the height of the telegram biz in the late 1920s, WU was delivering about 550,000 telegrams a day... In 2005, they averaged about 55 per day.
